I accidentally found myself in Inventor again today and couldn’t help but turn up the trance and go on a designing spree. This time, it’s for Nuclear Kitten 5.0, the replacement for the current build which is extremely battle-worn. I’ve been wanting to try a “disc motor” for a while, where a brushless motor is built directly into the hub of the weapon, but haven’t managed to find a stator and the effort to do it. A few 12lbers have used this type of direct-drive effectively. Plus, I like big outrunners.
Here’s a first draft of the NK disc motor. I haven’t designed the rest of the bot yet, but it will be invertable with a free-swinging weapon pod. The Titanium disc will probably be replaced with steel – conveniently creating a surface to mount magnets on, though the outer dimensions will remain the same. Notice the “integrated rutts of magnet holding”. Being steel, the disc should create a good flux containment ring.
The stator in the picture is 50mm in diameter and 6mm thick. This was sourced from a copier. Magnets should be three 6x3x2mm N50 chunks found on this site forming a magnet pole by being slammed next to eachother. There will be 14 total “magnet poles” to let me use a LRK style winding on the stator, increasing the motor torque by A Whole Bunch.
Don’t expect this to be built any time soon, though… Slightly steeper obligations are coming my way.
