{"id":2496,"date":"2012-12-12T20:04:28","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T00:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.etotheipiplusone.net\/?p=2496"},"modified":"2012-12-12T20:04:28","modified_gmt":"2012-12-13T00:04:28","slug":"cool-thing-of-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etotheipiplusone.net\/?p=2496","title":{"rendered":"Cool thing of the day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know why this hasn&#8217;t been all over the internet, but it&#8217;s huge and in my opinion shows great promise and is a boon for the future of personal fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.me.upenn.edu\/about-ug-ed\/documents\/MEAMWaterjet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">MEAM waterjet<\/a> was a Mechanical Engineering senior design class (not unlike our <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/2.009\/\" target=\"_blank\">2.009<\/a> but 2 semesters) which produced a <em>functional<\/em> abrasive waterjet cutter for under $10,000. No matter how proof-of-concept it is, <em>waterjetting for under $10,000<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I&#8217;m just so into waterjetting that only I find this amazing. Maybe I&#8217;m just super excited that there exists a potential for DIY waterjets as much as there is for DIY 3d printers and DIY laser cutters. Metal is the last frontier of these hobby class fabrication devices. Nothing can really do metal yet.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe I&#8217;m just miffed that my own bad waterjetting ideas haven&#8217;t made it beyond chicken scratch status on sheets of crusty paper.<\/p>\n<p>Yet.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.me.upenn.edu\/senior-design\/2012\/papers\/team08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">team&#8217;s whitepaper<\/a> on the machine&#8217;s design process. There&#8217;s no videos of the thing, nor really any good pictures.
